Leonid Levin: Architect Who Captured the Pain of Khatain

Today marks the 90th anniversary of the birth of Belarusian architect Leonid Levin. In June 1941, his father went to the front, while his mother and two young children were evacuated to Kyrgyzstan. She died several years later. The war left an enduring pain in his heart.

🕯The theme of the Great Patriotic War held a special place in the architect’s work. All his memorials evoke simple and understandable emotions in people and become part of their lives.

Among his projects, including co-authored ones, are the memorial complexes 'Khatyn', 'Breakthrough', 'Curse to Fascism', 'Children — Victims of War' in Krasny Bereg, the 'Yama' memorial, the 'Stalag-342' monument-memorial, and others. He also designed the monuments to Yanka Kupala and Yakub Kolas in Minsk, the 'Nemiga' and 'Ploshchad Lenina' metro stations, and participated in the reconstruction of Minsk’s historic center and Troitskoye Predmestye.

Levin passed away in 2014, but his creative legacy continues to live in the hearts of Belarusians.
