On July 29, 1942, the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR established military orders for Red Army commanders for outstanding merits in organizing and leading combat operations.
- Order of Alexander Suvorov, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd class: awarded to military leaders for skillful command of troops in critical combat situations, whose actions and decisions led to victory, including over numerically superior enemy forces. It was the senior award among the Soviet command orders.
- Order of Mikhail Kutuzov, 1st and 2nd class: awarded for a well-developed and executed operational plan—front, army, or separate unit—where Soviet forces maintained combat effectiveness, inflicted heavy damage on the enemy, and forced them into retreat. Skillful use of terrain, resources, and forces allowed breaking out of encirclement, launching breakthroughs, and inflicting serious defeats.
- Order of Alexander Nevsky: awarded for correctly choosing the moment to attack, actions and decisions leading to victory, including over superior enemy forces, while maximizing the preservation of personnel and equipment. It was the junior award in the series and had no classes.
