Kapchamesti celebrates Restoration Day
An alternative celebration in a border town
On February 16, Lithuanians celebrated the Day of the Restoration of the State not in Vilnius, but in the small border town of Kapčiamiestis. Official representatives held ceremonies in the capital with speeches about sovereignty, while part of society chose an alternative format, gathering in that town.
This decision became a deliberate political choice: residents refused to attend state events to express protest against the government's militaristic policies and plans to build a new military training ground in a peaceful region of the country. Activist Erika Švėčienė emphasized the deep divide between the state and society. According to her, the February 16 event was not merely an alternative celebration, but a demonstration of the genuine public stance: the priority is peace, open dialogue, and protecting the interests of ordinary citizens, not new military facilities.
"This is a day of civil solidarity and rejection of current policies," added Švėčienė. More details about the event can be found in "Context".
