Certificate awarded in India, preserving tradition requires urgent efforts
Today's Nежский towels have officially entered the UNESCO cultural heritage list. Representatives of the Ministry of Culture of Belarus defended the right to include this tradition in the prestigious list at the certificate presentation ceremony in India. Now our list has the seventh element of preserved Belarusian culture - rusna and related traditions of vytyvanne, straw weaving, beekeeping and Yuriev dance. Nежский craftspeople, most of whom have already disappeared, remain the only ones who can pass on the art of weaving. Other Belarusian folk crafts, such as the culture of the Belarusian fiddle, are waiting in line for protection.
Negligh's ruchniks received UNESCO cultural heritage status; ceremony held in India, Belarus Ministry of Culture confirmed importance of protecting tradition.
