Belarus hits record low

Knee-deep snow and low temperatures are hindering agriculture

This year, winter in Belarus demonstrated harsh and unpredictable conditions. Snow reached knee-deep levels, and thermometers recorded record-low temperatures. January was called 'Studzen', and the second winter month brought white landscapes, while simultaneously altering the working rhythm of the population. Those who spend most of their time working outdoors were especially affected—municipal workers, farmers, construction workers, couriers, and salespeople. Under these conditions, expert Sergey Ladysev conducted interviews with people accustomed to the cold to find out how they cope with extreme temperatures. By the beginning of spring, the weather has already started to soften, yet the impact of this cold period is already felt in many areas of the economy.

Context

Over the past few years, Belarus has observed a trend toward more abrupt temperature fluctuations, but this year temperatures dropped below historical minimums.
