Belarus at Winter Olympics: 7 athletes
Neutral status, 7 athletes at the Olympics in Italy
At the Winter Olympics in Italy, Belarusian athletes will compete as neutral athletes. Seven people will go to Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, while 13 will represent Russia.
The national delegation will be the smallest among the countries participating in the competitions. Not all international federations have accepted the IOC's recommendations on allowing athletes from both countries to qualify for the event as binding guidelines. For example, the International Biathlon Union (IBU) has taken measures to ensure that neither Belarusians nor Russians appear among the biathletes.
Thus, in February, Belarusian athletes will be cheering for figure skater Victoria Safonova and speed skater Marina Zuyeva. Three freestyle skiers have licenses: Anna Huskova, Anastasia Andrianova, and Anna Derugo, while cross-country skier Anna Korolyova and alpine skier Maria Shkanova have quotas.
Context
Last year, Belarusian athletes were restricted due to conflicts between the IOC and countries, which led to a reduction in the number of participants.
The Belarusian team, competing as neutral athletes, consists of 7 participants, while the Russian delegation has 13. Belarusians are supporting them at the Olympics in Italy.
