KGB reports foreign intelligence work

KGB chief discussed tasks and threats

Chairman of the State Security Committee (KGB) Ivan Tertel told journalists about the work of foreign intelligence. According to him, foreign intelligence operates wherever Belarus sees important national interests, as well as in places where potential threats are forming.

"Currently, these are issues related to the concentration of military efforts in neighboring states. We see the increase in defense budgets, the improvement of infrastructure in potential theaters of military operations. We also see that there are absolutely no grounds for such measures, and this alarms us. This is an additional task for foreign intelligence—to uncover the real plans regarding our country," Tertel stated.

Moreover, he noted that foreign intelligence reports to the head of state about possible aggressive intentions toward Belarus. "I would like to state, based on documentary materials reported to the head of state and on the basis of which decisions are made, that the long-term plans of our adversaries have not changed. This is a geopolitical redistribution in the region and accompanying goals—changing the constitutional system in Belarus," he emphasized.

"Overall, foreign intelligence and counterintelligence are carrying out tasks defined by the Supreme Commander," Tertel added. He also recalled that a recent anniversary—105 years of the foreign intelligence bodies of the State Security Committee—had been celebrated. He stressed that intelligence work takes place under conditions requiring special resilience and devotion to the Motherland.

Ivan Tertel concluded his speech with words of support: "We never forget the tasks you solve and what you do for the Motherland."
