Epiphany Eve, January 18
Tips and rules for ice swimming in Belarus
In Belarus, the Orthodox Christmas Eve is celebrated on January 18, traditionally involving bathing in specially prepared ice holes. Over 130 bathing sites have been organized across the country, and safety recommendations have been issued:
- Bring non-slip slippers or a mat, a bathrobe, towel, a set of dry clothes, and a thermos with a warm drink.
- Entering the water is prohibited while under the influence of alcohol; do not dive or swim underwater, do not bring pets, and avoid large groups of users.
- Submerge only up to the neck; submerging the head may cause a sudden constriction of brain blood vessels.
- The duration of staying in icy water is limited to one minute to avoid body hypothermia.
These measures help preserve the health and well-being of participants in the traditional holiday.
