MVD clarifies: 'Indian slave' is a hoax
Seemingly, but the story about slavery is false
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs' statement dated March 23, 2024, it was confirmed that online 'fake' news emerged about an Indian citizen being sentenced in Russia based on unverified information. The Minister of Internal Affairs clarified that a story about an 'Indian slave' appearing online is 100% false.
According to the MIA statement, the Indian citizen arrived in Belarus in November 2023 under a contract with an agricultural enterprise. Upon arrival, she was provided with housing and a residence permit. The contract was terminated after 8 days, resulting in the cancellation of her permit. Recently, she traveled to Russia and returned, after which her agent in India disappeared, having deceived her about the job and vanished.
Currently, law enforcement agencies are checking everyone: the employer, intermediaries, and the agent – all will be held accountable. The Ministry of Internal Affairs has completed a preliminary investigation and identified confirmed facts to clarify the situation and carry out investigative actions.
Confirming that 'there is no chronologically accurate fact,' the MIA noted that currently there are no grounds to suspect that the citizen suffered as a result of a crime in the country.
Context
In similar cases involving reports about Indian workers in Belarus, there has been clear misunderstanding online, increasing attention towards verifying employers and intermediaries.
The Interior Ministry debunked the rumor of an "Indian slave" calling it a "fake"; outlined factors: contract, duration of stay, revoked permit, disappearance of the agent, and the start of an investigation involving all parties.
