Fifth edition of the Red Book
523 species of plants and animals
The fifth edition of the 'Red Book of Belarus' was presented in Minsk. The new edition consists of two volumes containing photographs, distribution maps, descriptions of habitats, population numbers and threats, as well as conservation measures. The publication includes 523 species of plants and animals, of which 55 are newly added and 38 have been removed as they are considered restored from the state's perspective. Special attention is given to mosses, algae, lichens, and fungi. The European bison is a prominent success story: the population has exceeded 3,000 individuals, placing Belarus among the top three countries worldwide in terms of this species' numbers.
Natalia Eismont, press secretary of the President of the Republic of Belarus, noted that 'the system of monitoring and protection of natural resources in Belarus is unique in Europe.' According to her, this is a 'complex achievement' reflecting respect for nature as part of the Belarusian character. The first copies of the publication were handed over to the Palace of Independence, where they received an honored place. Moreover, the event takes place during the year of improvement initiated by the president, emphasizing that efforts to preserve nature continue.
