Snow and floods: key government measures
The government is preparing for possible flooding after heavy rainfall
The government of Belarus has announced the creation of a special commission under the Council of Ministers for emergency situations to coordinate efforts to prevent flooding caused by heavy snowmelt. As early as February, all state agencies and major operating companies have been involved. Work parameters include inspection and repair of shut-off devices, valves, dams, and dikes, as well as clearing riverbeds and access roads to hydraulic structures. Emergency teams are being prepared and supplies of materials are being replenished.
In the event of a threat, the government has announced its readiness to instantly regulate water discharge, deploy icebreakers, and organize evacuations from high-risk areas. The presidential press center clarified that the measures are aimed at protecting the population and infrastructure during the spring snowmelt period.
These actions are planned for spring, when snowmelt may cause a sharp rise in river water levels and potential flooding.
Context
Last year, Kazakhstan and Belarus faced floods caused by massive snowmelt, leading to dam collapses and evacuation of residents. These events increased attention to water absorption and river level monitoring issues.
The government of Belarus is organizing special measures to prevent flooding after heavy snowmelt, including inspections of hydraulic structures and preparing emergency teams.
