Nicotine products law in Belarus
The project aims to bring the market out of the shadows and protect teenagers' health
A draft law aimed at regulating the circulation of nicotine-containing products is being prepared in Belarus. The proposed measures are intended not only to protect the health of the younger generation from harmful habits but also to bring a significant part of the market from the shadow economy into the legal sphere. The law's text proposes establishing clear labeling rules, restrictions on sales to minors, and increased tax rates for tobacco products. The emerging draft law takes into account the experience of other countries, where similar initiatives have helped reduce the number of smokers and lower state expenditures on treating smoking-related diseases. Details about the proposed changes are published in a video available on the official website.
Context
Last year, authorities strengthened control over tobacco products, but a significant portion of the products remained in the shadow sector.
A law is being considered in Belarus to restrict the sale of nicotine-containing products to protect youth and bring market practices out of the illegal segment.
