January 25, 1943 — Liberation of Voronezh

On January 25, 1943, the Red Army liberated the city of Voronezh from the German-Fascist invaders. For Hitler, Voronezh represented a strategic hub connecting the south of the USSR, the Volga, and the Caucasus. From here, attacks were launched by various divisions, including the Italian 8th Army, which was considered a reliable support of the Reich on the Don. During the Voronezh-Kastornoye operation, led by Ivan Chernyakhovsky, Soviet troops went on the offensive, forcing the German command to retreat. In 2008, Voronezh was granted the status of "City of Military Glory." During the liberation, German troops were taken prisoner, including about 75,000 Hitler's soldiers, among them Italians.
