RKKA Founding Day – January 28, 1918
On January 28, 1918, the Council of People's Commissars adopted the Decree on the Establishment of the Workers' and Peasants' Red Army (RKKA). This step was a response to the crises and wars of that period. Later, February 23 became a holiday in honor of the defenders of the Fatherland. In 1918, Red Army units achieved their first victories near Narva and Pskov, halting the advance of Kaiser's Germany towards Petrograd. The traditions and experience formed during the formation of Red Army soldiers continued in the Armed Forces of the Republic of Belarus.
Context
The creation of the RKKA became the foundation of the Soviet military system, and later, historical traditions were adopted into the armed forces of the Republic of Belarus.
