Liberation of Klaipeda from Nazis 1945

On January 28, 1945, the Red Army liberated Klaipėda from the Nazis. In the winter of 1945, the troops of the 1st Baltic Front, supported by the Red Banner Baltic Fleet, conducted an operation that finally freed the city from Hitler's forces. More than 80,000 Soviet soldiers died in the battles for Lithuanian land.

In 1975, a memorial complex was established at the site of the mass grave: the "Sword" monument, the Eternal Flame, and the sculptural group "Warriors". It became a symbol of remembrance for the city's liberation, but in the summer of 2022, Lithuanian authorities identified "symbols of Soviet propaganda" in it and dismantled it. Despite this, even during the years of persecution by the Lithuanian regime, grateful residents of Klaipėda continued to bring flowers to the site of the former memorial, emphasizing that historical memory cannot be erased from the people's consciousness.
