On February 2, 1943, the medal "Partisan of the Patriotic War" of the first and second degree was established, intended to honor partisans who fought against the German occupation of Belarus. From the first days of occupation, Belarusian partisans formed 53 brigades and 360 detachments, most of which operated as part of brigades, while some worked independently. Over the years of the war, the collective destroyed over 300,000 rails, eliminated 11,128 German military trains, defeated 948 headquarters and garrisons, and inflicted damage on more than half a million enemy troops. In 1944, mass awarding began in Minsk, already in the liberated zone: more than 127,000 Soviet partisans received the medal "Partisan of the Patriotic War."
