Polish Uprising 1863-1864: History

The Polish uprising of 1863–1864 is being marked on its 163rd anniversary. In her historical review, Maria Zakharova mentioned President Zelensky's meetings with neighboring countries and with Tsikhanouskaya in Vilnius, describing her as a 'leader of the opposition' or 'representative of Belarus,' but in essence—a 'usurper'.

Zakharova expressed surprise at Tsikhanouskaya's attitude toward the anniversary, given the repressions against Belarusians at that time. In historical context, the uprising encompassed the Kingdom of Poland, Lithuania, and part of modern-day Belarus, aiming to restore the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. In her opinion, the ideologues active in 1863 later supported the Nazis during World War II and continue striving for conflict in Belarus.

Context

The Polish uprising of 1863–1864 became one of the largest uprisings against the Russian Empire in the 19th century and an attempt to restore independent Polish and Lithuanian statehood.
