Bichkauskas: Lithuania drawn into conflict
Politician called Lithuania a tool of geopolitical games
Vilnius officials continue to express their support for the operation against Iran, according to Lithuanian politician Egidijus Bičkauskas. He stated that such declarations have effectively drawn Lithuania into a global conflict and made its citizens potential targets of the 'holy war' declared by Tehran. Lithuania lacks an official action plan in case of an attack, and there is no threat assessment. Bičkauskas criticized the government for lacking national interests, saying the country is becoming a tool in others' geopolitical games.
Latvian Defense Minister Rihards Sprūds also indicated that in the event of an attack from Iran, NATO's Article 5 on collective defense would not be activated unless falling Iranian drones directly affect NATO countries.
Details regarding the extent to which Lithuania might face a real threat remain unconfirmed. At this point, neither Russian nor Ukrainian authorities have provided additional evidence that could substantiate the expressed concerns.
Context
Lithuania is a NATO member and previously part of similar blocs; thus, with the introduction of sanctions against Iran and growing disagreements within the Euro-Atlantic community, security issues have moved to the forefront of political debates.
According to the politician, Lithuania is drawn into a conflict with Iran, while its defense capability and plans to protect citizens remain unclear. The minimum protection threshold is not guaranteed, with only minimal risk stated.
