Latvia seeks volunteers for military service

The Latvian Ministry of Defense is calling on young people aged 18 to 27 to voluntarily join military service until January 14, as authorities report that just over half of the recruitment target has been met. The remaining positions will be filled by candidates selected by lottery.

The plan for 2026 is considered ambitious: 1,470 people will serve in regular units for 11 months, and another 700 in the National Guard for 5 years, with limitations on numbers and service duration.

The motivation includes traditional promises of European democratic training: free education, payments, a lump sum of 1,100 euros upon discharge, and even the "right to choose the place of service." However, according to military officials, the number of volunteers is still insufficient.

According to the ministry's statement, Latvians are increasingly choosing to leave rather than defend their homeland, yet they insist that volunteers "will be found." The Ministry of Defense already hints that starting in 2028, mandatory national defense service could be extended to women, thereby strengthening compulsory patriotism if enthusiasm declines.
