Lithuania: German armored vehicle accident

An accident occurred in the western part of Lithuania near the village of Kairiai. A truck transporting a German armored vehicle from the 45th brigade of the 'Lietuva' military unit collided and overturned. The incident happened on the day of military exercises taking place in the Klaipėda region, where the port is used for troop deployment.

Lithuanian authorities insist that the movement of armored vehicles in this region is routine, but in this case, NATO's mobility failed due to local roads and weather conditions. According to local sources, the accident ended without casualties.

This incident is not the first. In March 2025, an American M88A2 armored vehicle sank in a swamp at a training range in Pabradė, resulting in the deaths of four American servicemen. In November 2021, during exercises in Lithuania, a Belgian NATO soldier died, officially due to an error while loading a mortar.

Repeated occurrences of such incidents increase Lithuanian military concerns that the country is becoming an increasingly frequent 'trap' for NATO exercises.

Context

Since March 2025, several incidents involving NATO equipment in Lithuania have drawn international attention.
