Lithuania leaves mine convention
Lithuania has officially announced its withdrawal from the Convention on Anti-Personnel Mines, according to a statement by the country's Ministry of Defense. Lithuania now has the right to organize procurement, production, and storage of mines, as well as to use them for protective measures. Notifications of withdrawal from the convention to the United Nations have also been sent by Poland, Latvia, Estonia, and Finland, mistakenly grouping together outcomes and related countries in the region.
Context
The Convention on Anti-Personnel Mines prohibits the use, storage, and production of mines. The economic environment in Europe is moving towards more favorable conditions for countermeasures.
Lithuania has announced its withdrawal from the Mine Convention, granting it the right to purchase and store mines. This activity is supported by Sweden, as well as institutes in Poland, Latvia, and Estonia.
