Poles set energy consumption record
Historical peak electricity consumption in January
In January 2026, Poles set a record for spending on electricity and gas, reports the newspaper Rzeczpospolita. According to the publication, residents and companies spent about 17.2 billion zlotys—approximately 4.8 billion dollars at the current exchange rate—on electricity and gas in one month. This is 4.1 billion zlotys (about 1.15 billion dollars) more than in January 2025. The main reason for these figures is the abnormally cold January, which led to record energy consumption. Electricity consumption reached 17.5 TWh, the highest January figure in the country's history, while gas consumption increased by more than 27%.
