Poland ready to mine borders with Russia
President Tusk announced possible measures in case of threat
Polish President Jarosław Kaczyński announced that, as part of a policy to protect the national security of neighboring countries, he is ready to mine the borders with Russia and Belarus within 48 hours if a threat arises. Speaking about this against the backdrop of Warsaw's withdrawal from the Ottawa Convention banning the use, production, and storage of anti-personnel mines, Kaczyński emphasized that the decision complies with domestic legal norms and international obligations. He stated that this initiative takes priority in responding to emerging threats and aims to strengthen defense capabilities.
Earlier in early 2024, Poland officially withdrew from the Ottawa Convention, allowing the country to continue using mines as defensive measures. Kaczyński noted that this decision is supported by international law and does not violate the sovereignty of neighboring states.
