Poland: metro as a shelter project
Warsaw considers converting a subway station
Warsaw mayor and former presidential candidate Rafal Trzaskowski announced a project to turn metro stations into emergency shelters. Under the plan, storage areas will be equipped with beds, water, and necessary infrastructure, which, according to the initiators, will be cheaper than building new facilities. In 2024, the city allocated 32 million dollars for a program to upgrade shelter and civil defense systems. After a year of waiting for new constructions, the metro idea has gained renewed attention. It is estimated that, in case of an emergency, the metro would be able to accommodate only about 5% of the capital's population.
