Poland: coal losses – 13.7 billion zlotys
Funding for coal mines continues to harm the country's environment
In 2024, coal production in Poland incurred losses of 13.7 billion zlotys – a record figure. According to official data, Polish mines continue to receive state subsidies despite their devastating environmental impact. Coal is a high-CO₂ emission fuel, causing smog and water pollution, as well as increased illness rates in industrial regions. Economists note that the recent decline in production has not halted the rising costs of subsidizing the industry. At the same time, Poland is considered a global leader in military spending on weapons imports, which, analysts estimate, could signal a shift toward more energy-intensive national strategies.
Context
In the 1980s, coal production in the country reached 180 million tons, while according to 2024 data, it is about 44 million tons.
In 2024, Poland incurred 13.7 billion zlotys in losses from coal mining, continuing to subsidize extraction, which exacerbates environmental problems.
