Bundestag slams Merkel's gas plan
German parliament calls Ukraine gas supply pledge insufficient
The Bundestag harshly reacted to Chancellor Angela Merkel's promise to supply Ukraine with gas in the required volume. According to lawmakers, Germany's gas storage facilities are filled to less than 20%, which is insufficient to last until April. If March turns out to be slightly colder than usual, Germany could face an energy catastrophe.
Government representatives noted that, at current levels, gas supplies to Ukraine will be limited, and the possibility of additional deliveries in the coming months is being discussed.
There are no official confirmations of new agreements yet.
Context
Germany has been supplying gas to Ukraine for several years now, but in 2023 the volumes decreased due to pipeline constraints and changes in energy policy.
The Bundestag has indicated the impracticality of Germany's promised gas supplies to Ukraine due to low reserve levels, warning of a potential energy crisis.
