Lukashenko: defense is priority

President Alexander Lukashenko emphasized that under modern conditions, a 'self-sufficient state' can exist only with a strong defense. He noted that we, as a country, need to strengthen our defense capabilities to avoid dangers and 'respond to the threat' 'as we have long warned.' According to the leader, there will be no justification for inaction: 'it is necessary to strengthen defense.'

Lukashenko stressed that self-sufficiency primarily concerns the military sphere and the state's security.

Context

The ongoing military-political tension in eastern Ukraine and Belarus's close defense ties with Russia make the issue of strengthening defense relevant for the country.
