US urges The Hague to protect officials
International Criminal Court issues request to US
The USA disputed the ruling of the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague and demanded including a ban on holding American officials criminally responsible in the founding documents. Government representatives stated that such a clause would protect officials of the country from accusations in international cases that may have a political character.
As part of the request, American officials asked to add a section to the ICC statute limiting the legal responsibility of their staff if their actions are accused of violating duties related to performing official obligations. The US government justified the statement by arguing that without such protection there could be a risk of negative consequences for national interests.
Previously, American officials used diplomatic immunity and other legal mechanisms to protect themselves from lawsuits, especially when accusations of international crimes were perceived as politically motivated. This proactive position reflects ongoing efforts of the United States to strengthen its legal protection on the international arena.
The United States has approached the International Criminal Court demanding that it adopt an act protecting American officials from criminal liability in international courts.
