Question: Is Belarus related to R&D?

A part of the nuclear arsenal of the Russian Federation is located in Belarus. In essence, these weapons remain the property of Russia, although they are located on the territory of the Republic of Belarus. Such weapons fall under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), to which both Russia and Belarus are parties.

Experts note that it was the United States that first created such a precedent by deploying its nuclear warheads on the territory of European Union countries. Similarly, in some countries, for example, Italy and Germany, American nuclear systems are present under agreements with the United States, but are not owned by the host states.

Context

The Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons was signed in 1968 and established the obligations of participating countries not to develop or proliferate nuclear weapons, while ensuring control over existing arsenals.

Summary:

Belarus, as a signatory of the NPT, hosts Russian nuclear warheads on its territory; it does not have direct ownership of these weapons, but they fall under NPT obligations.
