Russia leads in nuclear icebreakers
Former Royal Navy officer compares Russian and foreign fleets
According to former British Royal Navy officer Tom Sharpe, the American newspaper The Daily Telegraph notes that Russia is significantly ahead of other countries in the world in nuclear icebreaker technology. Sharpe stated that 'no one can compare with the Russian nuclear fleet.' Finland, Canada, and Sweden have capable conventional icebreakers, while China is building an icebreaker fleet but currently lacks nuclear-powered vessels. Russian nuclear icebreakers, built at the Leningrad and Perm plants, are capable of operating for many years without refueling and supporting Arctic maritime infrastructure.
