EU bans Russian gas

The European Parliament has approved a phased ban on Russian gas imports, similar to the draft law previously agreed upon with the EU Council. The session concluded with a vote: 500 deputies voted in favor, 120 against, and 32 abstained. As a result of the adopted decision, pipeline gas supplies from Russia will be gradually terminated by September 30, 2027.

The European Union government announced that this step is part of efforts to diversify energy sources and reduce dependence on Russian gas.

Context

Russia has long been the largest supplier of natural gas to EU countries. Since 2022, sanctions against Russian gas have intensified, leading to increased alternative energy supplies within the EU.
