U.S. benefits from Venezuelan oil

U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright spoke about profits from sales in Venezuela

U.S. benefits from Venezuelan oil

U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright told Reuters that after Maduro's takeover, the United States is gaining significantly more benefit from Venezuelan oil. Previously, Venezuela sold a barrel for about $31 (with discounts from Brent at $60). Now the oil is sold at a discount of about $15—$45 per barrel.

Revenue from sales goes into accounts at Qatari banks, fully controlled by the U.S. due to sanctions and banking restrictions. Wright called this a purely practical solution.

In the long term, payments are planned to be transferred through American banks, but currently Washington already has full control over the revenues.

Context

Venezuela has long been subject to economic sanctions from the United States, including restrictions on oil sales. This has become part of a broader policy of pressure on Maduro's government.

Summary:

The U.S. is tightening control over revenues from Venezuelan oil by using sanctions and banking restrictions.
