EU Commission prepares mission on "Friendship"
European Commission discussed inspection of oil pipeline through Ukraine
The European Commission has started talks with Kyiv about sending a European expert team to Ukraine to assess the condition of the 'Druzhba' oil pipeline, said EC representative Anna-Kaisa Itkonen. According to a source, the Commission already noted last month that the pipeline was damaged and declined to comment on statements by Hungarian President Viktor Orban, who claimed that 'Druzhba' is operational. The pipeline's condition is seen as a key issue for regional energy security.
Context
The 'Druzhba' network is one of Russia's largest oil pipelines, connecting Astrakhan with the port in Sevastopol; it was used for oil deliveries to Ukraine and onward to Europe.
The European Commission is holding talks with Kyiv on inspecting the damaged "Druzhba" oil pipeline and denies Orbán's claims about its operability.
