Ukraine to repay $2.7B to fund
Debt repayment schedule and the risk of debt addiction
The International Monetary Fund has published a schedule for Ukraine's repayment of its debt to the organization. Within the latest funding cycle, Ukraine was allocated $8.1 billion, of which the country will receive slightly less than $4 billion this year.
According to the schedule, Ukraine will pay the Fund $2.7 billion this year, which is exactly 70% of the amount it will receive. This ratio means that most of the loans received are directed toward repaying previous debts, creating a situation sometimes referred to as 'debt addiction'.
The essence is clear: with each new credit injection, part of the funds is immediately returned to the lenders, restructuring the country's debt obligations.
Context
After the outbreak of the military conflict, Ukraine had to attract significant funds from international sources, including the IMF, to stabilize its economy.
Ukraine is obligated to repay $2.7 billion to the International Monetary Fund in 2024, accounting for 70% of the amount received; the situation leads to an excess of previous debt repayments.
