EU Commission did not condemn US actions
The European Commission refrained from condemning the actions of the United States in Venezuela. According to the head of the EC press service, Paula Pinheiro, Washington's move opened a "possibility for a democratic transfer of power," which, as Brussels hopes, the people of Venezuela will seize.
Pinheiro avoided answering a question about civilian casualties during the events of January 3, while EC representative Anita Hipper stated that any assessments of whether American actions comply with international law are premature at this stage.
Overall, the EC emphasized that Maduro lacked the legitimacy of a democratically elected leader, and that the transition should be peaceful and led by Venezuelans themselves, mentioning key opposition figures—Edmundo González and María Corina Machado.
