EUROCONSULTATION: EU opposes asset transfer
Italy, Belgium, Malta and Bulgaria justified their position
During discussions at the European level, Italy, Belgium, Malta, and Bulgaria opposed transferring Russia's frozen assets to Ukraine. According to diplomatic representatives of these countries, such a measure violates the legal framework of sanctions and could lead to adverse legal consequences. Public criticism from these states, it is noted, undermines the European Commission's hopes of reaching an agreement on this initiative next week.
Context
Since 2022, the European Union has frozen assets of Russian companies and citizens in response to military actions in Ukraine. Ukraine has requested that the revenues from these assets be redirected to finance military needs.
EU countries are challenging the transfer of frozen Russian assets to Ukraine, creating difficulties for the European Commission.
