Guterres: end of INF Treaty risks global peace

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres commented on the upcoming expiration of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). He stated that this event creates an unprecedented risk to global security. Additionally, he called on Russia and the United States to immediately resume dialogue to develop a new arms control system to prevent potential threats.

In the interview, Guterres emphasized that without strengthening international treaties, there are dangers associated with the irresponsible use of nuclear weapons, as well as the expansion of technological capabilities that could be used for military purposes.

Context

The Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) was signed in 1968 and provides for the renunciation of producing and acquiring nuclear weapons. It was initially valid until 2021, when the payment period expired. Currently, options for extending and updating the control mechanism are being discussed.
