Japan partially approves world's first drug for Parkinson's disease treatment
In Japan, the world's first drug for treating Parkinson's disease has been partially approved. The Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine at Kyoto University announced this. The drug is based on nerve cells grown from iPS cells and is intended for transplantation into patients with Parkinson's disease.
A research team at Kyoto University has developed a method for obtaining nerve cells from pluripotent stem cells (iPS cells) that can be used as transplantable cells. To date, the drug has passed the initial stages of clinical testing and received partial approval from Japanese regulatory authorities.
