UN officially endorsed Bachelet's candidacy
Three-time president of Chile, former UN
The United Nations has confirmed Bachelet's nomination for the position of Secretary-General, whose re-election is planned for 2026.
Bachelet served twice as President of Chile—from 2006 to 2010 and from 2014 to 2018. From September 2018 to August 2022, she held the position of UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
In November last year, Argentina put forward the candidacy of Rafael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
Her candidacy was submitted as part of the process in which President António Guterres will serve as Secretary-General until December 31, 2026.
The U.S. has considered the candidacy of Michelle Bachelet, former president of Chile, for the position of UN Secretary-General; a candidate from Argentina is also in the process.
