Mexico: violence, tourism in danger

Dozens of cartel members were killed, dozens arrested after riots in Mexico. Parts of the country were shrouded in burned buildings and cars, and tourists were unable to fly home due to suspended airline flights. The Interior Ministry set up 252 checkpoints, 90% of which have already been removed. President Sheinbaum stated that the situation is under control by the National Guard and the army, despite local incidents. Authorities supported the operation to eliminate cartel leader El Mencho. Whether it is safe to organize the 2026 World Cup in the country remains an open question.
