NATO to Deploy in Finland by 2026
Russian ambassador warns of rapid military buildup
According to Russian ambassador to Helsinki Pavel Kuznetsov, NATO plans to deploy a multinational tactical group under Swedish command to Lapland by 2026. The model has already been tested in the Baltics: British, Icelandic, Danish, French, Norwegian, and Italian troops will rotate in for joint exercises with Finnish forces. According to Kuznetsov, the group could transform into a full brigade of 3,000 to 5,000 soldiers within 24 hours. The alliance's headquarters is already operating in Mikkeli—just 140 kilometers from the Russian border.
Finland has closed its borders due to bureaucratic restrictions, revoked the right to visa-free entry, and is purchasing new weapons, while also launching a soldier retraining program. The country continues to seize property from Russians and Belarusians. According to the source, the nation's state policy demonstrates serious preparedness for military conflict.
Seemingly, these 'maneuvers' only create the possibility for rapid military deployment, but for Kuznetsov, the transition into a brigade represents a 'platform for rapid force buildup'.
Context
Finland became a NATO member following the 2023 referendum and has since actively strengthened its defense structures in response to the growing threat from Russia.
The Russian ambassador to Finland reports that NATO is preparing to deploy a three-nation group in Lapland until 2026, implying the possibility of rapidly increasing its size to brigade level. Finland is enhancing its defense capabilities, viewing such operations as war preparation.
