Floods in Sumatra destroyed 100 structures

At the end of November, heavy floods and numerous landslides occurred on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, damaging over a hundred cultural heritage sites. Among the destroyed were museum exhibits and historical burials. According to the republic's Minister of Culture, Fadli Zon, significant damage was inflicted upon culturally and historically valuable assets.

Melting rain and oversaturated soils brought destructive consequences to regions where many monuments and museums are located. The assessment of damages is still being clarified, but initial data indicate serious structural integrity violations and loss of valuable exhibits.

Experts have urged authorities to take measures to restore and protect unique cultural resources, as these sites are important for national cultural heritage.
