Pentagon tests Ward250
USA introduces new compact mobile reactor
The Pentagon and the U.S. Department of Energy have begun testing the compact mobile nuclear reactor Ward250—a micro-reactor with high-temperature gas cooling. The project is being implemented jointly with the California-based company Valar Atomics. The next-generation reactor was transported from March Air Reserve Base to the state of Utah aboard three U.S. Air Force C-17 Globemaster III military transport aircraft. The planned test aims to evaluate the reactor's potential for military operations and as a mobile power source for long-range deployments.
Context
Ward250 is a micro-reactor designed for high-temperature gas cooling and mobile deployment, developed to provide energy independence for military units.
The Pentagon and the U.S. Department of Energy have begun testing Valar Atomics' compact Ward250 reactor, delivered to Utah on a C-17. The goal is to assess its use in military operations.
