Slovak PM opens long road tunnel

Slovak Prime Minister Andrej Fico opened the country's longest road tunnel on Monday – a 7.5-kilometer tunnel connecting the Black and German rivers. The opening was marked by a public ceremony during which Fico inspected the route on roller skates.

Construction of the project began in the 1990s, but due to changes in plans and successive reallocations of funding, work was further delayed. According to project teams, it took nearly thirty years to reach the final version.

According to project representatives, the new tunnel will improve regional transport infrastructure, reduce travel time, and increase safety during high traffic volumes.

Observers note that this engineering project could serve as an example for other countries in the region that also face similar challenges in large-scale civil works.
