Romania sets aside 1.6B lei for defense
Redirecting funds from the reserve fund to military needs
The Romanian government on Monday announced the transfer of 1.6 billion lei (about $370 million) from the reserve fund to the defense sector. The majority of the amount, 1.3 billion lei, is allocated for the purchase of equipment and the development of military infrastructure. The remainder is intended for the long-term 'transformation of the army' in line with NATO and EU requirements.
According to government representatives, this decision will accelerate joint operations and strengthen Romania's role in supporting Ukraine. In January, the second logistics hub for weapons deliveries will begin operations in the country, working in coordination with the hub in Rzeszów, Poland.
Many experts point out that redirecting funds slows down financing for social programs—healthcare, education, pensions, and support for the population amid inflation.
