Cyclist killed by lightning in Peru
Young German athlete dies during light circle
29-year-old German cyclist Florian Berg died from a lightning strike in the Andes, Peru, on January 17, 2026. He was on a round-the-world cycling tour to raise awareness about the impacts of climate change. On the day of the tragedy, the athlete was heading towards the Pastoruri Glacier from the city of Huaraz, where he took shelter in a tent during a thunderstorm. Despite attempts to contact the German embassy, the GPS tracker was turned off. Rescuers found military equipment left in the tent and Berg's body with the help of nearby shepherds.
