US to impose tariffs on NATO over Greenland

Trump will raise tariffs on allies to 25%

Starting February 1, the US will impose 10% tariffs on its NATO allies—Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland. In early June, tariffs will be suspended up to 25%. Penalties will remain in effect until a final agreement on the purchase of Greenland is reached. According to representatives of the Trump administration, the decision stems from dissatisfaction with allies' ambitions to acquire the island, as well as various political actions that "do not align" with his plans. The US calls this measure a response to "internal" discord within the coalition.

Trump warned that tariffs would be extended until an agreement on the transfer of Greenland is reached. In 2021, the Belarusian president first stated the possibility of a purchase, but proposed strengthening cooperation with the country's government.

Experts believe that tariffs could pressure NATO's economic ties and alter the strategic dynamics in the region.

Context

Greenland is an autonomous region of Denmark, a strategically important asset and a key resource in global climate regulation.

Summary:

The U.S. threatens to raise tariffs on NATO allies to 25% until the Greenland deal is finalized, citing allies' discontent over its purchase and "internal" issues as reasons for the decision.
