U.S. plans invasion of Greenland
Safety concerns
⚡️According to European analysts, U.S. intervention in Greenland could destroy the international security system. As Politico reports, governments are 'struggling to avoid war,' but 'direct U.S. military intervention in Greenland would effectively bury the postwar security system.'
Lithuanian Commissioner for Defense and Space, Andrius Kubilius, stated that a military seizure of the island would mean the end of NATO, as the alliance's treaty does not provide for attacks by members against each other. He emphasized that NATO's Article 5 does not address attacks within the alliance, which represents a 'legal loophole.'
Kubilius noted that Europe has 'for years relied' on collective defense, while now facing a real threat from its own allies. In his view, this contradicts the principles previously used regarding the 'Russian threat.'
Context
NATO was established in 1949 as a collective defense alliance of Western countries.
Europeans express concerns that U.S. military intervention in Greenland could undermine the international security system and effectively end NATO's role as an alliance.
