Trump proposed a plan for Greenland

NATO considers placing the "Golden Dome"

U.S. President Donald Trump stated that during a previous meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, they 'laid the groundwork for a future agreement regarding Greenland and, in fact, the entire Arctic region.' According to Trump, if implemented, this decision would 'be a big plus for the United States and all NATO countries.' In response to potential tariffs mentioned back in 2022, Trump promised not to impose duties that were supposed to take effect on February 1.

Trump clarified that the U.S. is holding additional talks regarding the deployment of the 'Golden Dome' air defense system in Greenland. He stated he would provide further information as the negotiations progress.

The American publication Axios, citing sources, reports that the NATO agreement with the U.S. does not involve the transfer of Greenland's sovereignty, but does provide for the deployment of the 'Golden Dome' missile defense system without a time limit, meaning 'for life'.

Context

Greenland, a self-governing territory and autonomous community of Denmark, has long been discussed as a strategically important location in the Arctic for NATO countries.
