Liechtenstein Aligns with EU Belarus Sanctions (2020–present)
Liechtenstein, a small EEA and Schengen member state with a sophisticated financial sector, has formally aligned itself with EU restrictive measures against Belarus. Liechtenstein's alignment is particularly significant given the country's role as an international financial centre, ensuring that Belarusian designated persons cannot use Liechtenstein financial institutions to circumvent EU-level asset freezes.
Mechanism of Alignment
Liechtenstein implements EU-aligned sanctions through its own domestic legislative framework, including the Law on International Sanctions (Sanktionengesetz). The government adopts ordinances mirroring EU Belarus sanctions decisions, typically within a short period of the EU adoption. Liechtenstein is included in EU High Representative alignment statements covering Belarus sanctions.Scope of Alignment
Liechtenstein's alignment with EU Belarus sanctions covers:- Asset freezes on all designated individuals and entities consistent with EU Regulation (EC) No 765/2006 and its amendments
- Travel bans through Schengen area membership
- Financial services restrictions preventing designated parties from using Liechtenstein banks, trusts and financial vehicles
